The Chicago Skyway: A Vital Transportation Link
History and Operations
The Chicago Skyway is a 7.8-mile-long toll road and bridge that connects the South Side of Chicago to Indiana. It opened in 1958 and is a critical part of the Chicago transportation system. The Skyway is owned and operated by the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and carries over 100,000 vehicles per day.
Features
The Skyway features two decks, each with three lanes of traffic. The upper deck carries westbound traffic, while the lower deck handles eastbound traffic. The Skyway also includes a pedestrian walkway and bike path that run along the side of the bridge.
Paying Tolls
Tolls on the Skyway can be paid electronically using an I-PASS or by cash. I-PASS is the preferred method of payment, as it allows drivers to pass through the toll plaza without stopping. Cash tolls can be paid at the tollbooths located at the entrance and exit ramps of the Skyway.
