A Public Defender, Civil Rights Attorney, and State Representative, Crockett Seeks Higher Office

Texas State Representative Jasmine Crockett, 41, is in a runoff election to replace longtime U.S. Congressman Al Green, who is retiring after serving 12 terms in the House of Representatives.

Crockett, a public defender and civil rights attorney, was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 2020. She has quickly risen through the ranks, becoming a vocal advocate for criminal justice reform, healthcare access, and education. She is also a member of the House's Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee.

In the runoff election, Crockett will face Republican candidate Wesley Hunt, a former Army Ranger and CEO of a non-profit organization. The runoff election will be held on January 28th, 2024.

If elected, Crockett would be the first woman to represent the 9th Congressional District of Texas in Congress. She would also be the first African American woman to represent the district since its creation in 1973.

About Jasmine Crockett

Jasmine Crockett was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the Oak Cliff neighborhood. She attended the University of Texas at Austin for her undergraduate degree and earned her law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

After graduating from law school, Crockett worked as a public defender in Dallas County. She later became a civil rights attorney, representing clients in cases involving police misconduct, employment discrimination, and voting rights.

In 2020, Crockett was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. She is currently the chair of the House Committee on Criminal Justice and a member of the House's Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee.

Crockett is married and has two children.
